Privacy Policy — AccentMirror

Last updated: July 2026

AccentMirror is developed and operated by Stuart Pendergast, based in the United Kingdom.

This policy explains what data AccentMirror collects, why, and what your rights are under UK GDPR and applicable data protection laws.

What AccentMirror does with your voice

When you record yourself speaking, your audio is sent securely to Microsoft Azure Speech Services for two purposes: transcribing what you said, and scoring your pronunciation. Audio is processed in real time. Microsoft does not store your recordings beyond the duration of the request. AccentMirror itself never stores your audio.

The text of what you said (your transcription) is sent to Anthropic’s API to generate personalised pronunciation coaching tips. Anthropic processes this text to produce coaching output and does not retain it for training purposes under their standard API terms.

Neither your audio nor your transcription is ever seen by the developer of this app.

Analytics

AccentMirror collects anonymised usage data (such as “session started” and “score shown”) to fix bugs and improve the app. No audio, transcriptions, or personally identifying information is ever included in this data. This is carried out under a legitimate interest basis rather than consent — we’ve assessed that it has minimal privacy impact while providing clear benefit in making the app work better for everyone. If you’d like to object to this processing, contact accentmirrorapp@gmail.com at any time.

Advertising

Free-tier (Echo) users see ads to help cover the cost of the AI services that power every session. For users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, ad personalisation is managed through Google’s certified consent platform (Google UMP) — you’re asked to make a choice the first time you use the app, and you can change it at any time via Settings → Manage ad privacy within the app. If you consent to personalised ads, your device’s advertising identifier may be used. If you don’t consent, or you’re outside these regions, only non-personalised, contextual ads are shown, and no advertising identifier is used. We never sell your data to advertisers or anyone else.

What we don’t do

Your data, on-device and in the cloud

Session history, scores, and coaching summaries are stored locally on your device, and are also automatically backed up to secure cloud storage (Firebase) so your progress survives a reinstall or a new device. This backup happens automatically from the moment you first open the app, tied to an anonymous device identifier — it does not require creating an account or entering an email address. If you later save your progress with an email address in Settings, that same backup becomes linked to your account. You can delete your on-device data by uninstalling the app; to remove your data from our servers entirely, use Delete Account in the app’s Settings, or contact accentmirrorapp@gmail.com.
